Winter Weather Tips: Prevent Frozen Pipes

1/22/2026

As temperatures drop, frozen pipes become a real concern for homeowners. A burst pipe can cause extensive water damage and costly repairs. Protect your home this winter with these simple steps:

1. Keep the Heat On

Even if you’re away, set your thermostat no lower than 55°F to help prevent pipes from freezing.

2. Insulate Vulnerable Pipes
Pipes in unheated areas like basements, attics, and crawl spaces should be insulated with foam or heat tape.

3. Let Faucets Drip
Allowing a slow drip from faucets connected to vulnerable pipes can prevent freezing by keeping water moving.

4. Seal Drafts
Check for gaps around windows, doors, and where pipes enter the home. Use caulk or insulation to keep cold air out.

5. Open Cabinet Doors
If your sinks are on exterior walls, open cabinet doors to let warm air circulate around the pipes.

6. Know Your Main Water Shutoff
In case a pipe does freeze or burst, knowing how to quickly shut off your water can minimize damage.

Stay safe this winter and protect your home from unexpected water damage.
