Help Keep Young Families Safe: Free Lead Hazard Reduction Program

1/15/2026

Did you know that childhood lead poisoning is one of the most preventable environmental diseases among young children? The Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) is working to protect families through its Lead Hazard Reduction (LHR) Program — and it’s completely FREE for eligible households.

What Is the Lead Hazard Reduction Program?

The LHR Program is funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and helps make homes safer by identifying and eliminating lead-based paint hazards.

What Services Are Offered?

Eligible homes may receive lead remediation services, including:

  • Window replacement

  • Door replacement

  • Wall stabilization

  • Interior and exterior painting

  • In some cases, grant support for minor home repairs

All work is completed by qualified lead abatement contractors.

Who Is Eligible?

You may qualify if:

  • Your home was built before 1978, and

  • You are an income-qualifying family with:

    • A child under age 6 who lives in or frequently visits the home, or

    • A pregnant woman living in the home

Both homeowners and landlords are eligible to apply.
